Family : MICROHYLIDAE
Species : Glyphoglossus guttulatus
Size (snout to vent) : up to 12 cm ? Glyphoglossus
guttulatus (Burmese Squat Frog, Orange Burrowing Frog, Blotched
Burrowing Frog) occurs in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos (see
Amphibiaweb link below). Mybis website (see link below) also lists the species as native in Peninsular
Malaysia.
This plump frog occurs in a range of forest types from lowlands to 400 metres elevation.
Breeding takes place in shallow waterbodies where the tadpoles survive as suspension
feeders. Emergents and adults inhabit forest floor leaf litter.
In Laos the species is known to occur in various forested habitats
including riverine forest, seasonally dry dipterorcarp forest, mixed
deciduous forest, seasonally flooded riparian forest, and disturbed
secondary dry evergreen hill forest (Nguyen et al, 2020).
This frog has a stocky body, with a short head and blunt snout. Its limbs
are short, and its fingers and toes lack expanded discs. The dorsum is
patterned with light brown and dark brown patches, typically with a symmetrical dark
brown patch along the vertebral line.
Larger frogs are reportedly consumed by villagers in Cambodia and Laos. This
has also been documented in Thailand, for example villages surrounding
the Yoddom Wildlife Sanctuary, northeastern Thailand, consume this frog, and
16 other species (Thongproh et al, 2019).
Figs 1 and 2 : Example from Siem Reap, Cambodia, measuring around 2
cm total length. It was found at the edge of secondary lowland
forest.
Fig 3 : Habitat of the example shown in figures 1 and 2; lowland
secondary forest with accumulated leaf litter.
